Enjoy the hidden treasures of a walk in Lykaio trails and the waterfall of Neda where you can swim.Its source is located in the mountainous area on the border of the two prefectures (very close to Andritsaina) and after 32 kilometers of a wonderful route it ends at the bay of “Elia” in Kyparissiakos. The Neda Gorge is accessible during the summer months and is a truly magical journey for all nature lovers.The hike can start from two points, either from Ilida near Figaleia and Epicurean Apollo or from Messinia near the villages of Sidirokastro and Avlona. The route is magical as it is surrounded by olive trees, fig trees, wild oaks and Kermis oaks.For the adventurous, there is a wonderful course that requires walking and swimming in the river waters.For the less fit there is a shorter hiking trail. Both pass through the two small waterfalls of Neda and end at the third large waterfall that forms a beautiful natural lagoon.Whichever route you choose, a dip in the icy waters of the lagoon below the great waterfall is a unique treat after hiking.
A quality of the local gastronomy, not usually met in Greek provinces, is the variety of ingredients and recipes; a bridge and meeting point of island, alpine and Asian Minor knowledge, and experience regarding the cultivation, gathering and finally cooking of the exceptional raw materials. Don’t miss the chance to taste hortopita (pie with wild greens and spinach), trahanopita (pie with trahanas), dolmadakia yalantzi (grapevine leaves stuffed with rice), and chicken stuffed with trahanas.
